Massapequa Girls Soccer in State Final

Chiefs beat Baldwinsville on freshman Taylor Kugler's late goal.

The Massapequa Chiefs earned a berth in the state class AA girl's soccer final with a dramatic  2-1 win over Baldwinsville at SUNY Cortlandt Friday.

The win came from an unlikely heroine as freshman Taylor Kugler  found the net with three minutes remaining in the game.

Kugler was on the Chiefs' junior varsity squad this season and joined the varsity just before the start of the playoffs.

It capped a tight game. Massapequa opened the scoring with a Brooke Palmer goal off a pass from Taylor Elliott in the first half, but was shut down after that.

"We had numerous scoring chances to open the lead but didnt convert," Chiefs coach Bruce Stegner said.

Baldwinsville scored with 13 minutes remaining, but outstanding defense by Massapequa's Tara Brady and Stephanie Nelle kept things close.

Goalkeeper Emmalee Meyer made six saves before Kugler got her the win.

Massapequa takes the field in the state final  at 1 p.m. Saturday against  Webster Thomas High School at Tompkins Community College in Cortlndt.

Webster Thomas is located in Webster, NY, about 10 miles northeast of Rochester.
