Massapequa Girls Soccer Team Wins State Championship

Chiefs take fourth state title with 2-0 over Webster-Thomas.

The Massapequa girls soccer team completed a dream season Saturday by taking home the state Class AA championship with a 2-0 win over Webster-Thomas.

The Chiefs opened the scoring  ten minutes into the game at Thompkins Comunity College in upstate Cortlandt when freshman Taylor Kugler, who put home the game winner in the state semifinal, scored off of a throw-in by Brooke Palmer a few minutes into the first half.

Massapequa held the one goal lead through most of the contest as they played outstanding defense.

With about 13 minutes remaining in the second half, the Chiefs put the game away on a goal by Erica Modena with an assist by Taylor Elliot.

"We had a good combination of senior leadership and younger players," said coach Bruce Stegner,who praised the contributions of four seniors in the Massapequa backfield, Victoria Lander, Jamie Strumwasser, Stephanie Nelle and Tara Brady.

"They played every minute of the game and did a stellar job," Stegner said.

Midfielder Amanda Reverberi was the MVP of the tournament while Emmalee Meyer was named top goalkeeper.

It was the fourth time  has won the state title, Stegner has also won championships in 2003 and 2005 and the school also won in 1997.
