Massapequa Baseball Suffers Tough Sweep At Hands of Farmingdale

The Chiefs slipped in the rankings after losing three straight to the Dalers.

As the regular season approaches it conclusion, Conference AA-I will come down to the final series for the likes of Massapequa, Farmingdale, Oceanside and Syosset to determine if they advance to the postseason.

This past week, Massapequa slipped down to fourth place in the standings after suffering a three-game sweep to Farmingdale, who moved up to third place for the time being. The Chiefs (10-6, 7-5) lost each game by two runs or less as the breaks fell the in the direction for the Dalers (8-8, 8-4) to take the series.

In the first game at Farmingdale on May 2, it was Farmingdale starting pitcher Alex Brosnan who came through for the Dalers to throw a complete game shutout in a 2-0 win. Brosnan struck out 13 Chiefs while surrendering just two hits for his third wining decision of the season.

Massapequa had their chances with a tie score through five innings and Ryan Van Buren throwing a solid game on the mound, but Nick Colasurdo hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth in what would prove to be the game-winning hit.

In the second game at Massapequa on May 3, the Chiefs went into the top of the seventh inning ahead 4-2, but the Dalers fought to the end against pitcher Jonathan Mulford and took a 5-4 lead to eventually pick up the dramatic win. Ian Kornfeld hit a two-run triple to take the lead after Frankie Lettieri scored earlier in the inning.

Ryan McCormick pitched well in the unfortunate loss for Massapequa, but it was Anthony Galanoudis who pitched four shutout innings in relief for his first varsity win at Farmingdale.

In the third game at Farmingdale on May 5, Massapequa was looking to salvage at least one game with the series already in Farmingdale’s hands. Ryan Boix pitched well for the Chiefs, but it was one swing of the bat for the Dalers that ultimately decided the game.

Colasurdo came through again to hit a big three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to eventually help Farmingdale win 3-1. Chris Vitale gave up just two hits while striking out eight batters for the Dalers to pick up his third winning decision as well.

Heroes: Nick Colasurdo got the eventual game winning hits in both the first and third games of the series to aid great performances by the Farmingdale pitching staff against Massapequa.

Turning Point: In Massapequa’s last two series against Hicksville and Oceanside, they lost the first game only to win the next two. With a chance to win the second game on their home field, Farmingdale won in their final at-bat to hand Massapequa a heartbreaking 5-4 loss.

Bottom Line: Farmingdale, Syosset and Oceanside are in a three-way tie at 8-4 for the Conference lead, and Massapequa is just one game behind at 7-5. The winner of Conference AA-I will ultimately be determined at the conclusion of the teams’ final series over the next few days.

Key Stat: Massapequa is 4-5 in their last nine games. Farmingdale started the season at 0-7 and is 8-1 since to make a remarkable turnaround and jump into the playoff hunt.
