Massapequa Boys Advance in Volleyball

Chiefs win the first match of the Class A quarterfinals, sweeping the Herricks Highlanders 3-0.

The Massapequa Chiefs rolled into the semifinals of the Nassau Class A Boys Volleyball Playoffs Saturday winning three straight games over the Herricks Highlanders, 25-9, 25-10, 25-22.

Heroes: All-Conference Senior Middle Blocker Jeffrey Kim had various blocks and kills while another All-Conference player, Junior Setter Joseph Yoon, had several  assists throughout the game.

“I’m happy because we made it this far and we tried but sad that we lost," Joseph Yoon said, adding, "We couldn’t really do much about it, they’re the number one team. It was a great season and maybe next year we’ll do better.”

Turning Point: While Massapequa dominated the first two games, Herricks didn't go down without a fight in game three as they tied the game twice at 9-9 and 20-20. Though it was a close game, the Massapequa Chiefs came out on top winning 25-22.

Still, Herricks remained in good spirits.

“They outplayed us the first two games but the third game we were right in there with them," Head Coach Craig Weinberg said. "If we would have gotten started a little earlier who knows how it would have turned out in the end."

Quotable: "I feel great, we went up against the superior team," Weinberg said, adding, “We had a real successful season and I’m really proud of my guys.”

Bottom Line: As the number one seed, Massapequa, who is looking to win their third consecutive Nassau County title, proved they have a strong team as they remained undefeated 16-0 during the regular season.

Who’s next? Massapequa will play the Long Beach in the semifinals at Hofstra University on Tuesday.
