Massapequa Coast 11-Year-Olds Win Second Straight

Crush Port Washington 11-1.

Massapequa Coast took the field at Burns Park Thursday looking to impress their home fans and trying to go 2-0 in the Long Island 11-year-old tournament.

That all added up to a tough night for their opponents Port Washington, who were on the receiving end of an 11-1 thrashing.

It was a dominant performance, but it didn't look that way at the start.

Starting pitcher Teddy Turano had problems finding the strike zone in the first inning. He walked the lead off batter and that brought home the lone Port Washington run.

Port Washington had lost 10-0 in the previous game and finally had a glimmer of hope. It would be very brief.

In the bottom of the first, the Massapequa bats picked up right where they had left off the night before, when they beat Plainview on a walk off home run.

Dylan Nealis who hit the heroic dinger, led this game off with a double up the middle. The very next batter, Justin Schirmacher launched another double that would tie the game by scoring Nealis.

Then it was time to play long ball again. Austin Torres gave one a ride over the left field wall, making it 3-1. But they weren't done as Mark Rodriquez, Turano  and Brandon Fanizza each followed with doubles to score another two runs to make it a five run inning and a four run game.

With a comfortable 5-1 lead over their opponents, Turano settled down retiring the next group of Port Washington batters with ease, striking out another two.

The top of the third inning saw a pitching change, as Massapequa brought in Andrew Hyatt who also started a little shaky walking the first batter.

But the problems were short lived as first basemen Brandon Fanizza robbed a batter of a hit to end the inning.

The hit parade continued in the bottom of the fourth. Nealis lined another double over the center fielder's head and Schirmacher drove him in again.

Rodriguez, aka "M-Rod " hit a monster shot to the right field wall that would score two and land him at third base with a triple. Keenan and Fanara would both get on base for Turano who doubled them both in and ended the game at 11-1 because of the 10 run rule.

"Hitting was the key again, but our weakness is still the walks" said Coach Brian Schirmacher adding "we need to tighten our pitching for Saturday's game."

Massapequa Coast will take on Bayport/Blue Point at 10 a.m.
