Massapequa Coast Opens Up Sectional Play With Big Win Against East Williston

The Coast 12-year old Little League shut out East Williston in the Sectionals.

The Massapequa Coast 12-year old Williamsport Little League started out their Sectional tournament play with a dominating 13-0 win over East Williston, the District 28 champions, on Saturday afternoon at Brady Park.

“Austin [Torres] pitched great and Teddy [Turano] came in to close it, and our offense was on point as well to start off with the win,” said Massapequa Coast head coach Brian Schirmacher.

Coast wasted no time getting their offense started, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Justin Schirmacher knocked in the first run with an RBI single, followed by another RBI single from Mark Rodriguez. After Schirmacher reached home on an error, Albie Fanara hit the teams’ third RBI single and Teddy Turano wrapped up the surge with a two-run double.

In the bottom of the second, Fanara knocked in another run with a single and Turano produced a second run on a fielder’s choice play to lead 8-0. Austin Torres started on the pitching mound for Coast, going three strong innings without giving up a run while striking out seven.

Schirmacher and Torres started the scoring in the bottom of the third with back-to-back solo home runs. Chris Keenan crossed home on an error and both Turano and Andy Hyatt hit RBI singles to push the lead to 13-0.

With the 10-run mercy rule in effect, Turano, who drove in a team-high four RBIs, came on in relief for Torres in the top of the fourth to pitch three consecutive outs and wrap up the win.

“Pitching again is the key. We are going to need five or six guys who can pitch to be able to get through this,” Schirmacher added.

Coast, the District 31 champions, will be part of a six-team pool play. They will also match up against East Meadow (District 32), West Islip (District 34), Bayport/Blue Point (District 35) and North Shore (District 36). The top two teams will meet in the finals to determine the Long Island champion on July 24.
