Massapequa Football Beats Farmingdale 49-28

Chiefs beat rivals in Conference I action.

The Massapequa Chiefs struck early and they struck often as they defeated rival Farmingdale 49-28 in Conference I football action on Saturday.

Massapequa is now 5-2 as they continue their push for postseason seeding, while Farmingdale must regroup as they fall to 3-4.

"We stressed to [our players] all week to come out and fire on all cylinders, it's a big rivalry game for us, Farmingdale's a great team, so you've got to be ready to play 48 minutes and the kids were today," said Chiefs Coach Kevin Shippos.

It all started in the first ten minutes of play, as Massapequa scored three times for a 21-0 first quarter lead. Matt Pagano hit Dan Muller on a short pass that Muller took 15 yards for the score. After Craig Berge intercepted Dalers QB Dalique Mingo, Pagano ran it in himself from 10 yards out, and moments later Vassili Grigorakos scored on a 27-yard run.

In between, the Dalers kept going three and out on offense, giving the Chiefs a short field to work with, but Farmingdale coach Buddy Krumenacker wasn't going to use field position as an excuse for his team's performance.

"We got outplayed, and if the field were a little longer, it would've continued on," Krumenacker said. "If they had to go 65 [yards] instead of 35, I believe they would have."

The game could be summed up by a play early in the second, as Pagano threw short to Berge who raced ten yards to the five, then lateraled to TE Rob Flood who took it in for the score. The improvisation made it 28-0.

"The play was originally just a curl, I wasn't expecting the pitch so when it came up, I just put my hands out, thank God I caught it and put it in the end zone," Flood said.

The Dalers tried to get things going, as Tyler Ward scampered 56 yards to the 14, but were unable to punch it in as Mingo's pass to the end zone fell incomplete. The Chiefs took advantage immediately as Pagano found Muller again, this time for a 71-yard hookup for the score, and a 35-0 advantage.

Ward finally found the end zone, on an 80-yard catch and run, but couldn't recover the onside kick (and were unsuccessful trying to do so all day), and Pagano threw a 31-yard TD to Jack Korber. Mingo drove the Dalers down the field and scored from six yards out to make it 42-14 at the half.

The Dalers 'D' finally stopped the Chiefs on fourth down early in the third, but had to punt, and through the line came Massapequa RB Taylor Bocchiaro on a 28-yard TD run.

Farmingdale had a couple more big plays left, on a Justin Martin 44-yard TD catch and a Mingo 57-yard scoring run, but there simply wasn't enough time for much more, and the Chiefs came away with the win, their first victory over the Dalers in seven tries.

Hero: Chiefs QB Matt Pagano, who was 10-11 for 195 yards and 4 TD's, also ran for a score.

Turning Point: Flood's 'hook and ladder' score in the second. The improvised trick play showed this was going to be Massapequa's day, going away.

Quotable: "The playoffs will take care of themselves, we just take it one game at a time, and try to win every game, and we'll see what happens in the playoffs," Chiefs Head Coach Kevin Shippos said.

Who's Next: The Dalers will wrap up their season at Oceanside next Saturday, while Massapequa heads home to face Hempstead, with the playoffs on the horizon.
