Massapequa Rolls over Syosset

Boys volleyball team sweeps all three games.

Considering the circumstances, it would have been understandable for the Massapequa Chiefs boy's volleyball team to loose Tuesday afternoon's boy's volleyball contest with the Syosset Braves.  The Chiefs were coming off an emotional win over previously undefeated Plainview JFK and a let down would not have been impossible. It was also Syosset's senior night, which brought out a raucous crowd, complete with a D.J.

While a let down would have made sense, it didn't happen. Massapequa dominated the Braves in every way possible in route to a  three game sweep. After beating the Braves handedly in the first  game, the Chiefs squeaked out victories in the second and third. They blew an 18 – 14 lead in the second before scoring three of the final four points to earn the win. In the third set, Massapequa earned the final four points to preserve 25 – 13, 25 – 23, 25 - 22 victory.

The Chiefs finished the season 10 – 1 and expect to earn the number one seed in the Nassau County playoffs.

Hero: Christian Smith – Simply put, Smith was outstanding. Whether it be with an assist or a kill, he came up big when the game was on the line. With the score tied at 22 in the second half, Smith slammed down a kill to tie the score at 23. Massapequa rattled off the next two points to move to within one game of the sweep. The Massapequa co – captain was not only effective, he was flashy as well. The Chiefs broke a 10 – 10 tie with an acrobatic behind the head kill by Smith. This electrified the already deafening Massapequa faithful who had made the trip.

Turning Point: Syosset held a 18 – 16 lead in the third set. Finally coming alive, the Braves had silenced the Massapequa fans who made the trip. Three quick Chief points put Massapequa ahead and killed one of the only moments of sustained momentum Syosset had all day. The Chiefs closed out the match by winning six of the next ten points.

Quotable: "It was pretty fun," Christian Smith said of the electric atmosphere, "I like ruining people's senior day.

Bottom Line: Syosset couldn't match Massapequa 's intensity. In fact, the Braves came away from the match feeling like they played well in the second and third game. The Chiefs could not have asked for a better way to enter the playoffs. Wins against two teams that were undefeated at the beginning of last week make a big statement about how dangerous Massapequa is.

Key Stat: The Chiefs won the third set despite loosing the break point battle 8– 6.
