Massapequa's Bria Smith in NCAA Women's Title Game

Former Christ the King star looks to play key role for Louisville Tuesday.

One of Massapequa's own will be in the national spotlight Tuesday night as Bria Smith will attempt to help the University of Louisville win the NCAA Women's Basketball championship.

Smith, a hoops star at Christ the King in Queens, hopes to be part of a team that duplicates the success of the Men's program which won the national championship over Michigan on Monday Night.

The Louisville women will tip off against the University of Connecticut at 8:30 p.m. The game will be televised from New Orleans by ESPN.

Smith helped the Cardinals to the title game, scoring 17 points and pulling down six rebounds in a 64-57 win over California in the National Semifinal game.

One of her rebounds with 18 seconds remaining iced the game for Louisville.

“It felt so good to get that rebound,” she told the Baton Rouge Advocate. “We had struggled with that in the first half, but we came together after halftime and started keeping them off the offensive boards.”

She's been a force all season for Louisville, averaging 9.6 points and 4.3 rebounds.

The sophomore guard was a third team Freshman All-American, a year ago. Coming out of Christ the King, she was ranked as the eighth best player in the nation.
