Massapequa’s Offensive Outburst Wins Mid Atlantic Final

Massapequa advances to championship game of the East Region Invitational, defeating Berlin 22-0

The Massapequa Coast Little League's 9 and 10 year-olds became Mid-Atlantic champions in explosive fashion Friday afternoon. 

Massapequa made it to the final as and blasted the Maryland champions from Berlin 22-0.

Coast advances to the championship game of the East Region Invitational, which will be held at 12:30 PM on Saturday afternoon at the John Chaffee Athletic Complex, in Cranston, RI.

Massapequa struck in the bottom of the first, pushing across three runs. Dylan DeGiovanni’s double to the right field fence brought in the first run and starting pitcher Nick Collins drove in the second run with a bloop single. Matt Zanfardino earned a walk with the bases loaded, and Massapequa led 3-0 after one inning of play.

The second inning would spell doom for Berlin and essentially end their unbelievable run in the tournament. DeGiovanni picked up another RBI double, which extended the lead to 5-0. He finished 3 for 4 and notched 3 RBI’s in the game. Anthony Patullo had two hits in the second inning, and three RBI’s in the inning, finishing with five RBI's on the afternoon. Connor O'Rourke and Nick Schneidler each had RBI base hits in the inning.

After the dust had settled, Coast had scored 12 runs in the inning, taking a commanding 15-0 lead.

"We’ve always had a great offensive team," Massapequa manager Paul DeGiovanni said.

Pattulo's double to the centerfield fence in the bottom of the third increased the lead to 19-0, driving in two more runs. They would add three more runs in the fourth, and won the game 22-0.

New York starting pitcher Nick Collins did not allow a run in four innings of work, allowed one hit, and recorded four strikeouts.

DeGiovanni praised his team's attitude before the game and praised Maryland's squad. "They were all totally focused and no one was speaking before the game," he said, "Maryland is a class act team."
