Whiz Kid: Kelsey O'Brien

O'Brien is a two-sport athlete who looks forward to a future in the Navy.

Whiz Kid: Kelsey O’Brien, age 16

About Kelsey: Kelsey is currently a junior at Massapequa High School and is a prominent member of the Field Hockey team in the fall season and the Lacrosse team in the spring season.

In the fall, Kelsey was selected as a member of the New York State Field Hockey team, along with being a selected member for the Long Island and Conference teams after setting a new school record in goals as the Chiefs’ captain. As a member of the team thus far, Massapequa has won two Nassau County championships.

In Lacrosse, Kelsey was an All-Conference player in 2010 after leading the team in goals and is currently competing in her third season on the Varsity squad. She has played a large role in helping the Chiefs reach three County title games.

Aside from sports, Kelsey enjoys hobbies such as swimming, playing the flute, listening to  Taylor Swift music  and watching shows like Glee, Bones and NCIS.

Key to Awesomeness: Kelsey has her ideals in place, namely family, school and sports. Her success in sports is clear, but the junior is also one of the top-ranked students in her class, holding a 4.72 GPA out of a total of 4.75. She is a member of the Principals Honor Role and has won Scholar Athlete awards in the past.

Kelsey is an active volunteer in youth Field Hockey and Lacrosse clinics and is also a member of the SADD program to help children recognize proper safety and dangers of alcohol. She is a peer mentor at MHS to help incoming freshmen with adjusting to a new environment as well.

Kelsey has decided to attend the United States Naval Academy, where she will focus on either Engineering or Medicine while also playing Lacrosse for the school. Upon graduation, Kelsey will plan to enlist in the United States Naval Force for at least a time period of five years.

Each week, Massapequa Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. This is open for every grade level at every school in the community. Send us your nominations.

when you say elite do you mean the hard working people who have money? it's a matter of labels. youRead More call them elite..they call themselves hard workers. yes, some inherit money. but most of us work for it.
Michael Taustine June 16, 2013 at 09:01 pm
No, it has nothing to do with how hard you work. It's just that the elite one percenters are treatedRead More differently when they run afoul of the laws in this country. No one has been jailed for the corporate malfeasance that resulted in the financial crash of '08, in spite of the rules that were ignored or broken. Too big to fail is the order of the day. Meanwhile, petty frauds committed by poor and middle class are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Two Americas. The rule of law, unevenly applied, whether by race, or class, or economic station will result in the unraveling of society. We may well be seeing the beginnings of that now, as we've entered a new gilded age, where new robber barons are allowed to run roughshod over the lower classes. The very ideals of America are at stake, and we are letting them slide away.

Will the new Massapequa station platform be covered end-to-end as it is now? If it will only beRead More partially covered, like Seaford station, there are going to be a lot of cold, wet, unhappy commuters.
Patrick O'Hara June 12, 2013 at 04:14 pm
Mr. Coyote, The design plans only call for a canopy over certain parts of the station platform, likeRead More almost all of the other stations along the branch. The canopies will be primarily over the staircases, elevator, waiting room, and one other small section on the middle section of the platform between the elevator and east escalator.
