Whiz Kid: Kristen Moldovan

Moldovan is a seventh grader who is the lone-female member of the Berner Middle School Baseball team.

Whiz Kid: Kristen Moldovan, age 12

About Kristen: Kristen is currently a seventh grader at the Berner Middle School in Massapequa. Growing up, Kristen always preferred the faster pace of baseball over softball, according to her father Bill who said she is a member of the middle school baseball team as both a pitcher and a third baseman.

Kristen currently plays in the Massapequa International Little League, where she has also broken ground again as the lone girl in the league competing with all boys. She has been selected to the All-Star team each year she has participated. The seventh-grader also plays for the Long Island Braves travel Baseball team where she has a batting average of over .500.

Aside from her athletic competition in Massapequa, Kristen is a member of an all-girls U-13 baseball team, called “The Dream Team”, with other girls from seven different states. The Dream Team travels throughout the country to compete in boys’ tournaments, where they have won over half of their games thus far. Kristen will travel to Denver, Colorado to compete in her next national tournament in the end of July.

Kristen has grown up to be a natural athlete, as she led the Berner Middle School field hockey team in goals in the fall. She also plays travel volleyball and basketball for Saint Rose of Lima Parish during the year.

Key to Awesomeness: The boys don’t seem to have any issue with having Kristen being a part of their league because she routinely stands out as one of the top players. She has pitched two complete game no-hitters in the last three years for The Dream Team in national tournaments.

More importantly, Kristen excels in the classroom at Berner, earning placement into the Principal’s Honor Roll for the third quarter in school. She also enjoys playing the piano when she is not occupied by one of many sports.

Kristen has had the support of family, friends and teammates to help her succeed in her aspirations up to this point. Her incredible work ethic is a trait that stands out and has enabled her to achieve new goals. It has set her well on her way to become a positive role model for young student-athletes and a top competitor for the Chiefs of Massapequa High School in the future.

Each week, Massapequa Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. This is open for every grade level at every school in the community. Send us your nominations.
