Massapequa 2013 Summer Camp Guide

With the warm weather on the way, now is the time to select a great summer program before they all fill up.

With a little less than four months left in the school year, local parents have already started planning for their kids’ summer vacation.

And that means one thing: Summer camp.

To help you decide, Massapequa Patch has compiled this summer camp guide featuring a host of programs in town – and many others from nearby towns – to make the job of picking the one that’s right for your kids a much easier experience.

Farmingdale:

Name: School of Rock

Type of camp: Musical/performing arts

Details:. School of Rock aims to inspire children to rock on stage and in life. It offers five summer camp programs spanning one- or two-week sessions to improve musical skills and understanding.

Name: Prime Time Early Learning Center

Type of camp: arts and crafts/music/reading

Cost: $250 - $325 per week, depending on number of days. $110 registration fee.

Where: Prime Time Learning Center, 270 Airport Plaza Road, Farmingdale.

When: June 24 - Aug. 28, closed July 4.

Deadline for registration: As space permits.

Details: Prime Time offers a day camp for children ages 4 - 10. Each week there is a different theme which includes arts and crafts, music, reading, computers and trip activities. Camp is from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. with optional before and after care from 6:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Name: Camp Farmingdale

Type of camp: variety/sports/crafts

Cost: $325 per week, $65 registration fee.  

Where: Farmingdale State College, 2350 Broadhollow Road, Farmingdale.

When: June 24 - Aug. 16. Closed July 4.

Deadline for registration: May 1

Details: Farmingdale State College runs a day camp for children ages 5 - 12 that features themed weekly events, outdoor sports and games, arts and crafts, and weekly trips. All trip costs are included in the camp fee.

Name: Dilly Dally’s Nursery, Pre-Kindergarten and Day Camp

Type of camp: variety/outdoor/sports/arts and crafts

Cost: *Call for specific programs

Where:  Dilly Dally, 210 Merritts Road, Farmingdale.

When: July 8 - Aug. 16

Deadline for registration:  First-come, first-serve as space permits.

Details: Dilly Dally’s runs a summer camp program for children ages 3 - 7 available in mini-day, full-day or extended sessions for two to six weeks.  The program will include a variety of camp activities and specialty-themed days with more traditional swimming, arts and crafts, music and drama.

Name: Future Stars

Type of camp: sports

Cost: $455 - $495 per week, depending on number of weeks. Little Stars: $405 - $445 per week

Where: Farmingdale State College, 2350 Broadhollow Road, Farmingdale. Nold Hall. .

When:  June 24 - Aug. 16. Not all activities available each week.

Deadline for registration: Open enrollment, as space permits.

Details: Future Stars offers sports program for children in grades 2 - 12 to learn skills in their favorite sports: baseball, basketball, cheerleading golf, football, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, volleyball and multi-sports. In addition, Future Stars offers a Little Stars program for children entering pre-kindergarten to first grade are introduced to various sports.

Name: Peanuts Nursery School

Type of camp: pre-school/educational

Cost: *2013 prices to be announced by April 15.

Where:  Peanuts Nursery School, 202-204 Main Street, Farmingdale

When:  July 1 - Aug. 22

Deadline for registration: Open enrollment starts April 15 until program is full.

Details: This pre-school offers a six- or eight-week summer day camp for children ages 2 - 6 to explore their world through games, arts and crafts, music, movement and sprinkler days.

Name: St. Luke’s Summer Program

Where: St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 145 Prospect St., Farmingdale

Details: St. Luke’s offers a summer day camp for children ages 3-7 to build social awareness and a positive self-image. Program activities will include Red Cross swimming instruction, gymnastics, sports, games, arts and crafts, and music. There will be special events based on each week’s theme.

Name: Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program

Type of camp: outdoors/variety/sports

Cost: $200 first child, $275 for two children, $75 for each additional child in the same family

Where:  Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park, 45 Motor Ave., Farmingdale

When: July 1 - Aug. 9, closed July 4.

Deadline for registration: June 14

Details: The Town of Oyster Bay offers a summer recreation program for children ages 4 - 12 at town parks and beaches. Activities include sports, games, trips, shows and even the

34th Annual Tobay Games. The day is divided into morning session, 9:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. and afternoon session, 12:45 p.m. - 3 p.m. No supervision is provided for lunch between 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. so parents must  make arrangements. Visit the town’s website for five other locations.

Massapequa:

Name: Wind ‘N Willow

Type of camp: educational/arts and crafts/outdoors

Cost: $108 - $270 per week for three-quarter days, $160 - $394 per week full time. Sibling Discount available.

Where: Wind ‘N Willow, 1201 N. Broadway, Massapequa.

When: July 1 - Aug. 9, closed July 4.

Deadline for registration: Ongoing, as long as space is available.

Details:  This Massapequa-based pre-school offers summer camp programs for children ages 18 months - 5 years,  from one- to six-weeks in length with different themes. Activities available at their summer camp include arts and crafts, music, nature study, and weekly pizza parties.

Name: Massapequa Soccer Club

Cost: $130 Massapequa Soccer Club players, $150 non-club members; Mini-Camp: $100 per player

Details:  Massapequa Soccer Club offers four one-week long camp programs where players can learn news skills and and drills. Mini-Camp is for U5 and U6 players, with full-day programs for older players.

 

Name: Tutor Time of Massapequa

Type of camp: Educational

When: June 25 - Aug. 30. Enrichment program: Sept. 3 - 6.

Details: Tutor Time runs a 10-week summer camp with different themed weeks the include art, sports, nature, technology, cooking and animals. Children are divided into groups by age: Discoverers (age 3), Explorers (ages 4 - 5), Adventurers (grades K - 5). Adventurers will take field trips twice a week along with sports, arts and crafts and more.

Details: This early childhood education center offers a summer program for children ages 3 - 6. The program’s activities include ceramics, woodworking, science, puppet making, arts and crafts and special guest days.

Name: Massapequa School District Summer Sports and Summer Recreation

Details: Massapequa School District offers a number of summer recreation and summer sport camp programs for baseball and football to tennis. These programs are open to Massapequa School District residents only and are contingent on the passage of the school budget.

Cost:  Junior Multi-Sport Camp: $215 - $270 per week half day, $395 - $475 per week full time; Junior Tennis Camp: $215 - $270 per week half day, $395 - $475 per week full time.

Details:  Sportime of Massapequa offers two sports camp for children during the summer: Junior Multi-Sport Camp (ages 4 - 14), Junior Tennis Camp (ages  4 - 17). The Junior Multi-Sport camp allows athletes to try their hand at a variety of sports, while Junior Tennis Camp allows children to focus on tennis.

Details: Mad Science offers fun half-day and full-day science summer camp programs for children entering kindergarten to 6th grade. Each week, camp has a different theme from Crazy Chemworks and Flight Academy to Advanced Robotics with hands-on activities.

Name: Thomas School of Horsemanship

Type of camp: horseback riding/outdoors

Cost: $2,950 - $5,995; For ages 3 and 4: $2,025 - $5,135

Where: Thomas School of Horsemanship, 250 Round Swamp Rd., Melville.

Details: Thomas School of Horsemanship offers a day camp where children ages 3 - 15 can learn to ride and and care for a horse. In addition to horseback riding, the program offers swimming instruction and sports activities.

Details: Crestwood offers a large variety of indoor and outdoor activities on their 15-acre campus for kids ages 2 1/2 - 16. Sessions are flexible with three-, four-, six- and eight-week programs or a "any 30 days" option. There are mini-day/week options available for preschoolers as well as a one day a week parent/child program for 18 - 30 months. Teen travel programs are available for those entering grades 7 - 10. Apprenticeships offer teens in grades 10 - 12 a chance to have work experience at the camp.

Driftwood offers mini- weeks for ages 3 - 8, four-, six- and eight-week programs for  children entering nursery school - 5th grade, travel programs for grades 6 - 9 and a junior counselor program for ages 15 and up to gain working experience.

Oyster Bay:

Name: Theodore Roosevelt Audubon Center Nature Day Camp

Type of camp: outdoors/nature/ educational

Cost:  $295 - $435 per week for members, $335 - $475 per week for non-members. Conservationists in Training: $225 per week.

Where:  Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center, 134 Cove Road, Oyster Bay.

When: June 24 - Aug. 29

Deadline for registration:  $35 early bird discount before May 15.

Details:  The nature center offers a 10-week summer program for children to explore and learn about nature. Children are divided by age groups: Chickadees (ages 4 - 6), Blue Jays (ages 7 - 9), Eagles (ages 10 - 12), Conservationists in Training (ages 13 - 17). Themes include “Nature Mythbusters” to “The Great Outdoors S`mores.” Special overnight trips are offered for pre-teens and teens.
