Swimming Prohibited at Town Beaches

Storm runoff causes health department to shut down swimming Tuesday.

Monday's stormy weather may have cooled off Oyster Bay but may also have increased bacteria levels in swimming areas.

Because of this, the Nassau County Department of Health has closed down swimming at several Town of Oyster Bay beaches.

According to the Town of Oyster Bay website, swimming is prohibited at the following beaches:

  • Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beach and Park
  • Centre Island Beach (Long Island Sound side)
  • Stehli Beach
  • Harry Tappen Beach
  • Philip B. Healey Beach

Swimming is still allowed at Tobay Beach and on the bay side of Centre Island Beach.

Officials said beach closures like these are usually lifted within 24 hours.

At 11 a.m., Village of Bayville officials announced all Sound Side beaches within the village were closed to bathing.
