My name is Tim Hardiman. I am the owner of Viceroy Investigations and Consulting LLC in Massapequa. I will be using this space on the Massapequa Patch to offer my comments on crime and security issues that impact businesses and residents here on Long Island.
I spent 23 years with the NYPD in a wide variety of assignments on patrol, investigations and training. I am also a Professor of Criminal Justice at American Military University. I have been a security consultant for a Fortune 100 company and I own a private investigation firm. Finally I work as one of the technical consultants for the TV show Law & Order: SVU so I'll comment on headline grabbing cases that may make it into a future episode.
I have a Google+ page where I've written articles similar to what I'll be posting for Patch. You can find it here: https://plus.google.com/b/111287431159340014484/ feel free to join one of my circles on Google+.
I subscribe to a large number of police, security and national security news services and email listservers. Some are specific to Long Island others are more general in nature. When something comes across my desk that I think is particularly time sensitive or important I rebroadcast it via Twitter. These tweets can be related to Sex Offenders, crime trends, dangerous weather or updates to this Blog and Google+. My twitter account is: https://twitter.com/ViceroyIandC. Please feel free to follow me there.
As you can see I've embraced social media. I'll be discussing the benefits and dangers of social media in one of my future posts.
I will be selective on what I discuss, things that impact the most people and issues they can actually do something about. Thanks for commenting, Tim
It is hard for me to judge without more context but from the little I know it appears to have been handled appropriately. Schools today need to have a bright line no weapons policy. But, it was handled by the school and not escalated to a police matter. As a precinct commander I faced a situation where an assistant principal caught a 14 year old student making graffiti in the boys' room. The assistant principal wanted the student arrested. I refused and told him "that is why we have assistant principals." Tim
That was my point - I think that is a good thing. I don't think activity should be criminalized that is really a disciplinary mater. Tim
