Long Island Braces for Snowstorm

Up to nine inches of snow could fall on the region by Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Long Island, where 5-to-9 inches of snow could fall on the region between Thursday afternoon and midday Friday.

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph are also expected at the height of the storm, which will also bring along extreme cold temperatures that could linger and stay below freezing until Sunday. Friday's high isn't expected to climb out of the teens.

The Long Island Rail Road has already started prep work for the storm. In an advisory, the MTA said platforms have already been salted and extra engineers and signal maintainers will be working.

"The railroads are activating switch heaters, lubricating the switches and treating them with anti-freeze agents," the MTA stated.

Separately, many school districts on Long Island reopen on Thursday, which means school delays or cancellations on Friday are possible.
