Former St. Rose of Lima Pastor Passes Away.

Msgr. Dan Hurley served as a priest for more than half a century.

Msgr. Dan Hurley, a long time priest at St. Rose of Lima Church, who served as their pastor for 13 years, died last week, church officials said. Hurley had been ill and hadn't celebrated mass at the church since November after he suffered a fall. He succumbed to pneumonia on Feb. 15. Msgr. Hurley was 79. The popular priest known as "Father Dan," went to school in Oyster Bay and attended Cathedral College in Brooklyn and Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington. He was ordained a priest in 1959 and was assigned to Our Lady of Lourdes in Massapequa Park. After a stint as pastor at St. Raphael's in East Meadow, he became pastor at St. Rose of Lima in 1995. He remained in that capacity until 2008 and stayed on as administrator when the …

Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs, 56, Dies

News spreads across the world about Jobs' death.

One month after stepping down as chief executive, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has passed away. The New York Times reported: Mr. Jobs stepped down from the chief executive role in late August, saying he could no longer fulfill his duties, and became chairman. He underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004, and received a liver transplant in 2009. In a statement, Apple said “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. TOBAY Music Under the Stars Founder Dies at 91

Former Massapequa resident Lois Inez Manning, served the town for more than 20 years.

Lois Inez (Hill) Manning of Jupiter, Florida peacefully passed away on June 8 at the age of 91. The former Woodbury resident was born in Moultrie, Georgia on March 18, 1920 and married on September 29, 1941 to Carl J. Manning, until his passing on July 5, 2000.   Manning's family moved from Massapequa to Woodbury in the winter of 1955. She later became involved with the teenage club atSyosset High School, and organized a committee and submitted a proposal to the Town of Oyster Bay for club funding in the late 1950's.  As a devoted volunteer with the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Development Programs in Syosset, Manning continued into the early 1960's. She was then hired in 1965 by the Town of Oyster Bay as Director of the Syosset-Woodbury …

Video: Nassau Police Honor Fallen Officer

An army in blue showed up in Selden Thursday for the viewing of fallen Nassau County Police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf.

Thousands of police officers in dress blue uniforms lined up outside the Selden Fire Department Thursday evening to pay tribute to fallen Nassau County police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf. Breitkopf, 40, a decorated veteran of the elite Bureau of Special Operations, was accidentally shot and killed Saturday by an MTA officer while responding to a call in Massapequa Park. He also was a volunteer firefighter in Selden, where he lived with his wife and two children. Among those on hand for Thursday services were Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey. Services for Breitkopf will be held Friday at St. Margaret of Scotland Roman Catholic Church, located at 81 College Road in Selden, beginning at 12:30 p.m. …

Video: Rembering Police Officer Michael Califano

Nassau County PBA President James Carver shares his thoughts about the fallen officer.

Police Officer Michael Califano of Wantagh was killed Friday night on the Long Island Expressway when he was barrelled into while conducting a traffic stop. Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey held a press conference Saturday morning to discuss what happened and offer the condolences and memories of their fallen comrade.
