October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month...Plus Awesome Adoptions this Week.

Not only is October a great month to adopt a pet, its also National Pit Bull-Awareness Month.   Did you know that Pits are one of the most misunderstood breed of dogs?  It's common misconceptions like "Pits are bred to fight, or Pits will turn on their owners" that contribute to their overpopulation in local our shelters.

But what few people realize is that Pits are one of the most reliable, loyal and family friendly dogs on the planet.  In fact, it's very common for Pits to be trained as rescue canine or as therapy dogs because they are deemed one of the more intelligent and well-tempered types of dogs.  Fun Fact: Pit Bulls score an 83.4% passing rate with the American Temperament Test Society. That's better than the popular Border Collie..(a breed who scores 79.6%).

With that said, please consider opening your hearts and your homes to one of the wonderful Pit/Pit Mixes available at our local shelters.  Here are a few, along with other super breeds, that can't wait find their forever homes...

First up, please allow me to introduce you to one of the prettiest Pit Mixes I've ever come across... here is Bunny (pictured).  Straight up- Bunny is adorable! She's about 1 year old, is very friendly, playful, loves everyone she meets, and is known as quite the social butterfly that has the potential for a great therapy pet!   Bunny might do best in a home with experienced tweens and up as she's a little high strung from the craziness of shelter life.  She is very playful with other dogs, and even walks nicely on the leash!   You can "hop" on over and meet Bunny at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter today.

And check out Chunk! (pictured).  What a perfect name for this mixed breed who is described as a big goofy guy simply looking for love. A nice animal control officer picked him up from off the streets this past August. He had some bumps and bruises but the vet fixed him right up. Chunk is up to date on all of his vaccinations, neutered and I even has a microchip!  He loves to make friends and happily shares his food. A big backyard, kids and couch is really all this pooch desires!  You can visit Chunk at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter as well.

Another awesome Pit Mix available at the TOH Animal Shelter is Bolo (pictured).  Bolo is aplayful, happy-go-lucky, 2 year old clown!  He loves everyone, even the most unusual of strangers, loves toys, and tolerates all types of handling. Bolo does tend to guard his food and chewies, so he'll do best with a patient, experienced adopter who can teach this little guy how to share.  Bolo would do best in an experienced household with teens and up.   Did I mention Bolo is great with other dogs, has already had basic training  (sit, down, stay, come, …) and is eager to learn more for a taste of his favorite treats! So don't wait- head on down and meet Bolo today!

And so if your reading this and thinking, I'm more of a Treeing Walker Coon Hound type of animal lover- well today is your day... Ladies and Gentleman... here's Chloe (pictured). Chloe is an adorable Hound with a slightly Basset face. She comes to Last Hope from a crowded Kentucky shelter where Hounds stand close to a zero chance of being adopted. She is a patient little pooch who longs for her forever home.  Chloe is available for adoption at Last Hope Animal Rescue in Wantagh.  For more information, check her out on the web at http://lasthopeanimalrescue.org/2013/09/chloe-2/

And to further promote Pit Bull Awareness, Adoption and Welfare, please Join Last Hope Animal Rescue and the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter on October 19, 2013  at 3300 Beltagh Ave in Wantagh from 11am-4pm for their 3rd Annual Bully Brigade for an adoption fair, vendors, breed advocates, holistic experts, face painting, and more...all promoting the wonder Pit Bull Breed!

Hope to see you there!
